Hello and thank you for joining us for today's Live Q&A session for admitted students to do's master of Engineering Management Program. Congratulations to all of you.
This is the chat box where you can submit your questions live. However, please know we received many questions to the registration process and will address those, so please do not repost questions that you were able to submit then.
I'm Susan Brown and I'll be hit your host today with doctor Brad Fox will get started in just a few minutes to allow everyone to log on. I can see those numbers climbing. We're really excited to talk with you and will get started in just a minute.
We are ready to get started. As I said, my name is Susan Brown. I'm here with Doctor Bradley Fox, Dr Fox. Thank you for joining us.
Oh, I think I lost him. We can. We can get started anyway.
It's a pleasure being here.
Oh, There you are There you are. No, that's OK, that's OK. Thank you so much. We had a record number of people register for this event doctor Foss so we're really excited to welcome all of these students here and I'm excited to be here with you today. Thank you for joining Maine.
Absolutely, it's great to be here.
That's great, excellent, excellent.
Before we get started, I do want to say that I know we were so disappointed to cancel our on campus admitted student day this year due to Cove. In 19 before we dive into the questions that were submitted during registration, can you briefly share what you wanted students to take away after attending that day?
I'm sure I. I mean, I think.
One of the things that we hoped students would get out of our admitted students day is a sense of.
Anisha Mohan Kottoor
09:02:41 AM
just wanted to check on any possible fee waivers/ scholarships for the program ?
This student engagement on campus and so you know that is hard to convey in a in a web and R and so that's probably what I'm most disappointed in because I'm most impressed by the way our students engage with other students. The number of clubs and activities they do, and so certainly I think that's my most disappointing aspect of not being able to have the admitted student day as we have typically had it.
JD Hastings

Funding and scholarships will be touched on during the webinar. Here is information regarding other external funding: https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/campus/tuition-financial-aid/external/other
Well, the good news is that I think the admissions and recruiting team has some plans to host some additional events, especially for Department who want to share more information about kind of those intangible aspects of the program. So that's great.
I do want to point out we got quite a few questions about how Cove in 19 might be affecting the incoming class will be communicating something to admitted students soon, right? But but can you talk about the programs flexibility in addressing that?
Sure, so you know we're all trying to figure out how we as a as a community respond to Cove in 19. You know of for the fall semester, which starts in August. That is too far away for us too.
Predict what situation may be in place when we get there. Certainly where all optimistic that we will have the coronavirus in check. But as I said, we cannot predict that. I think the one thing that I think we can commit to folks is just the flexibility in our program and the commitment by the University to support students in their education. However, we might have to deliver it so this semester, for instance, we've transitioned to.
Remote learning online education to make sure that students can continue with their academics and also we have always had a lot of flexibility in our program and so we for some reason there's something that might prevent someone from starting in the fall. We are very flexible and allowing folks to defer a semester or year. We again hope it doesn't really come to that, but our commitment to our students is, you know, this is a personal education and we.
We will work with students to figure out a solution for you so that you can get your education. I wish I could be more definitive, but at this point we really don't know more answers, but we are committed to provide students flexibility to earn their education.

For visa purposes, I would recommend proceeding as normal so that students can be prepared when consulates open or if their is a wait time.
Doctor Fox, thank you. I think that is a hallmark of Dukes Engineering Management program is flexibility and I want to stress again that you can defer admission for up to one year, one semester, or one year. If you're unable to get here for fall 2020.
On page just posted something in the chat page Anderson and JD Hastings are here running the chat for a slow guys. Thank you for your help but page Anderson just posted for visa purposes. I would recommend proceeding as normal so students can be prepared when consulates open or if there's a wait time. So that's a good thing. I think we should. We should move forward as if things are going to go the way we expect them to, and then we'll be prepared if things workout or will be prepared.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:06:15 AM
JD sent out a wave of visa webform credentials and we are accepting all documents electronically.
That's great. That's a great recommendation, and certainly that is our plan. We're moving with academically. We fully expect too.
To be starting classes here on campus in fall, and if something else occurs in will respond to that as appropriate.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:06:33 AM
He will continue to issue visa webform credentials as students accept their offers.

09:06:40 AM
Regarding the deferral, once we deffer we can consider it as confirmed admission or do we need to again go through the selection process?
Absolutely, alright, so now we're going to dive into all those questions that were submitted as part of the registration. So first, let's talk about program details. Someone asked about program lengthen scenarios. Please elaborate more on coursework timelines and we can complete our coursework. And when the cohort work have their graduation.
I think that's a question about 2 versus 3 semesters.
JD Hastings
09:07:21 AM
Hi Praneeth - deferrals do not require going through the selection process again. You can defer up to one year and are granted admission for that term.
Will it? It is so. So let me talk um, kind of specifically about the way the program is set up, and so the program is set up so that students may complete their degree within two semesters as long as they do an internship. That may be a summer as well, but we have the flexibility to allow students to stay as long as four semesters without seeking additional approvals. So so, as we've talked about quite a bit, we allow a lot of flexibility. I think the most common situ.
Location for students is do I want to complete the degree in two semesters or three semesters, and so let's talk a little bit about the academics around 2 versus 3 semesters, and then we'll talk about some other aspects of two versus 3 semesters so.
Uh, in order to remain a full time student, you must take um 9 units per term, and so if you're in a wanting to spread out your classes, sorry, let me back up in order to complete the entire degree. Not counting seminar, not counting the internship internship assessment. You have to take 8 academic courses and so in order to complete the degree in two semesters, you have to take four classes per semester or 12 units.
Uh, if you choose to extend the program, you can take 9 units, 9 units, and then, uh, 6 units in your third semester. So one of the benefits of going to versus 3 semesters is kind of distributing your academic load over a longer time. Another benefit for a lot of students that they see on 2 versus 3 semesters is the ability to do an internship.
Sarthak Achyut Vaidya
09:08:50 AM
Can you specify the costs that can be incurred in the 3rd semester?
Siddharth Sharan
09:08:57 AM
Hi, as many universities have been closed down temporarily, students are not able to procure hard copies of their transcripts to be sent over to Duke. What are we supposed to do?
In the summer between their second and third semester. So for an international student, for instance, by having studied in the US for two semesters, that gives you the opportunity to work in the United States under a program called curriculum practicum training, or often called just CPT, and so that's an option that a lot of students want to incorporate into their time.
Masters program and so they will do an internship in the summer and then return for 3rd semester to complete their program.
And so that's kind of one of the those are the two most common rationales for extending from two to three semesters. Is one is the academic load, and then the second reason is the opportunity to do an internship, specifically one in the US. After completing a couple of semesters in the US. So that kind of talked about the academics. Let me briefly talk about the.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:09:55 AM
Siddharth, you can bring your transcript to orientation this fall. If your university will issue an official transcript that is electronic, we can accept that (as long as it comes from a campus official). Those can be sent to pratt_masters@duke.edu.
JD Hastings
09:10:15 AM
Hi all - please know that we are seeing your questions. Not all will be made public immediately. *Please* do not submit duplicate questions.
Financial side of that, and So what we have put in place beginning fall 2020. So if you're talking to any current students or pass students, we had a different model in place for two versus 3 semesters. But this is a brand new model that we're putting in place for students coming in fall 2020, and the way that is structured is that you will pay your standard semester based tuition for the first and second semesters.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:10:31 AM
We will also add a formal deferral letter to your account.
And then the third semester you will pay no tuition. You will be responsible for student fees and that includes health fee as well as health insurance. But you will be responsible for any tuition and those fees for a semester are roughly on the order of $2500 or so, so you will have to have living expenses above and beyond that, but.
It certainly is not, uh, you know. The tuition is the major part of the cost of your degree, and so not having additional financial cost in that third semester really provides a lot of options for you to choose two versus 3 semesters based on what's good for you and not really forcing it to be a financial decision. Which is why we've put that program in place. I did mention there's an option to stay 1/4 semester.
And so you can stay 1/4 semester, but in that fourth semester you would pay by course unit so that semester would have to tuition based on the number of course is that you take. And then I think there was something wrapped in there around graduation.
Nitesh Wagh
09:11:46 AM
Do I have to pay any deposit to defer the admission by one year? If yes, how much?
Dheeraj Bagayath
09:11:53 AM
Will there be any change in tuition fee if the classes are taken online
JD Hastings
09:11:55 AM
No deposit is needed.
And again we have a fairly flexible approach for graduation, so you can participate in graduation is what we call a non graduating Walker after the first year and so you would participate in all of the graduation exercises. But you would not get your degree because you would not have earned your degree. But you can go through the ceremonies if that's what you choose to do. We can also participate in graduation after the second year.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:12:32 AM
We do not require an enrollment deposit regardless of whether you decide to come this fall or later.
Duke has its graduation or is formal graduation each year in May and so it only occurs once a year and so you'd have to do it, either in May of your first year or may have your second year and we allow both options depending on what makes sense for you, but we only allow one. We don't want you to walk twice and participate twice that just doesn't make sense.
Right, right? Thank you and one final question in this kind of program details, a student ask, can I take more than eight courses? Can you walk us through how a student might do that?
I will say that, uh, you know, eight courses in a two semester option is is pretty full. So four courses in a semester are a pretty intense workload. Occasionally. You know we have students that will take 5 courses in a semester, but we have to caution you that the workload associated with graduate courses is often different than what you might have had as an undergraduate. I know undergraduates can often take 567.
Let me just say that as I said, graduate classes or a little different and four courses will be a lot of five courses has been done on it usually is maybe one or two students, so semester it is not very common. So if you're wanting to take more than four courses, you can do that. We allow students to take up to five without special permission.
Vinay Pawar
09:14:04 AM
For deferral, do we have to pay any extra fees for this?
JD Hastings
09:14:18 AM
There are no fees if you decide to defer
Uh, and so if you're in the two semester option, you would have to take five courses a semester in order to take any any more than the minimum 8 required for the degree. The three semester option provides you a little bit more flexibility, right? So we do not constrain the number of classes that you may take during those three semesters. So, for instance, if you wanted to take 12 classes, you could take 4, four, and four right in that last semester. We don't limit you.
And the number of classes that you might take. Or you could take any amount less than that that you choose. So again, there's variability for students to take more than a classes if they so choose.
I get a lot of questions around auditing, which is also possible. Audit is where you sit in on a class. Well actually it depends on what the faculty members expectations are for auditing. But in general in an audited class you participate in some sort of reduced level. Often you may only sit in on class. You might be asked to participate on a team you might actually be asked to do the homework assignments again. That's up to the faculty member.
But at the end of the class you do not receive a grade and you in the class you just. It's listed As for audit and they simply verify that you participated in the class without receiving a grade. So we do allow students to.
To audit classes and so some students choose to do that, I would say that you should use that selectively. I think usually you learn by doing the work, and so if you're not really able to put the time in to do the work, the benefits of auditing are not as much as sometimes people think they are so, but we do have that option for students to audit classes beyond the courses required for their degree.
Excellent, thank you and I-1 final pre submitted course question is their flexibility to choose one or two electives from a different elective track or are we forced to select all four electives from one particular electric track only?
Sure, so um, let's talk about tracks for a minute, so these tracks are purely guidance, so they were put in place because we have over 30 M electives that students can choose an. It's a bit overwhelming for students to figure out. Oh, what do I want to take? And so we've identified these tracks in and grouped electives in areas that seem to make sense, but you can certainly take classes you actually, you can customize your degree. The only degree requirement is really that you.
484 classes that we have defined as a technical elective so you can.
Core classes yeah? Oh yeah, I got you. I got you sorry.
Sorry yeah yeah. Four elective classes. A technical electives.
To build your degree, but the the one so you can really customize the degree as you like. The one thing that we usually recommend to students though, is to make sure you have a story around the classes that you're taking. It is confusing to many employers for you to take classes one in data analytics and one in product management and one Indiana product design and one in entrepreneurship. If it's if it's all over the place.

Can an internship be completed in the 1 year program?
Aniket Fegade
09:17:43 AM
Hi, in case classes are switched to online classes will the tuition amount be reduced accordingly ?
They don't understand are having a hard time figuring out what it is you're interested in doing, and if you don't know what you're interested in doing, there are often reluctant to to hire an individual in that situation because they fear that in three months you will figure out what it is you want to do, and there's a reasonable chance that not may not be what you were hired to do when you may leave, and that's not a good situation for anyone so soon as you think about crafting your.
Nitesh Wagh
09:18:03 AM
Is there any tuition for audited courses?
A degree program. Make sure you can tell a good story around why the classes you took made sense to prepare you for the career that you want to have. But you can definitely expand a little bit and take classes outside of a given track.
JD Hastings
09:18:16 AM
Here is our verbiage regarding audit fees: Auditors are permitted on a space-available basis with the consent of the instructor. Students who pay by semester can audit courses at no additional cost. Students who pay by unit/course must pay a fee to audit courses. Note that some Physical Education courses may incur additional fees even if the student is auditing at no cost.

Excellent thanks, I wanted to get to some of the live questions that have been posted. We do not require an enrollment deposit fee. There is no fee to defer your admission an A couple of people have asked if we are moved to online classes. Will the tuition model change at all? Can you address that doctor Fox?
So we currently have a an M online program and the tuition for that is the same as the tuition for a residential program where we would see some changes in costs would be related to the fees. So there's a student health fee which assumes that you're using a student health.
Office that's here on campus. And so if you are not here on campus, it makes no sense to pay that. Similarly, there's a health insurance that.
Anticipates you having health insurance to be provided health services if you're in the US, and so if you're not here on campus, that again would not be required, so the difference would primarily be in fees and not intuition.
Siddharth Jagetia
09:19:45 AM
The hosts mentioned about taking 12 courses in a 4-4-4 format, how much would a student be paying extra in such a situation, considering the 3rd semester has no tuition fee?
Great and JD has posted a link to the tuition and fees page on our website, so thank you for that. Another quick question was can you do an internship if you're choosing to do the program in only one year and you absolutely can, you can do it before the program or after. Can you speak a little bit to that doctor Fox?
Sure, so again, it it kind of goes to our our flexible model of, you know our requirements for an internship or that you have completed an internship after you finish your undergraduate degree. So that is kind of the starting time point and then it internship has to be a minimum of eight weeks full time which is roughly 320 hours. So eight weeks at 40 hours a week is 320 hours.
Most students typically will spend about three months in an internship, but but that is the minimum that we expect. We also call it it internship, but if you have had full time experience after completing your undergraduate degree, that also can be viewed as an internship for the purposes of our degree requirements. And So what we find is that students do the internship in a variety of different timeframes. Some will do it before they.
Uh, start the program in August, either through full time work experience or after completing their undergraduate degree, though use that the upcoming summer to complete an internship. Other students will do it on the back end so they'll do two semesters of study. Then do an internship, an internship assessment over the summer, and complete the degree in a year. That way finishing up in September. And as I said, some students will do it in the middle where they return for fall semester.
Rohini Venkatesh
09:21:33 AM
Suppose I cannot make it on time for the program start date due to the current situation, will I be allowed to start classes 2-3 weeks late?
And then come do finish their internship assessment in in the fall and then complete their degree in December.
Great, and I think we do offer a lot of flexibility.
Um, there were several questions about internship and I think you addressed most of them. Let's see.
I think you addressed all of them. Thank you.
Alright, so um, someone asked about the standback internship program. You have to be a current Duke student to take part in that, so incoming students may not qualify, but you can send us an email at Pratt underscore Masters at duke.edu and will look into that for you. Alright, let's go ahead.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:22:13 AM
Orientation will take place in late August before classes start.
So I will. I will, I'll answer that a little bit right? So the stand back program is for current students and so a lot of students who were in the not a lot but a handful of students will do this each year that are in the three semester options, so that opportunity is available for you between your second and third semester.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:22:36 AM
You can arrive later but we recommend getting here as soon as possible.
Alright, let's move on to um.
Thank you JD in Page for addressing all these questions in the chat.
So so thank you for that. Let's move on to outcomes. We have a few questions about employment outcomes. What kind of careers do graduates of this program go into?
JD Hastings
09:23:01 AM
Great questions, Rohini. You are required to arrive in the US by the start date of the program. If you arrive much later, you risk being in violation of your F-1. We suggest getting here as soon as possible

One of my friends wants to apply for spring. When does Duke start accepting the applications for spring
So you know, everyone wants a nice, clear and succinct. A response to this, and so one of the great things to me about this degree is our students are able to customize their education based on what their interests are. We have, as we've talked about before, several different tracks that students can pursue, and within those tracks.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:23:38 AM
We start accepting applications in summer -- usually July.
JD Hastings
09:23:39 AM
Spring applications will open in the fall.
JD Hastings
09:23:47 AM
^Summer, rather.
They can certainly take a variety of different electives, so often no two students. Academic profile looks exactly the same, so if you look on our website, which I think they're highlighting, the link you see an interesting pie chart. I'm not sure it's shown on there, but it certainly shown on the link that talks about employment by job function, and it is made up of roughly 10 different slices of what our students do.
Ayush Bharatkumar Panjabi
09:24:07 AM
Can you give an estimate on how much can the student fees be, per one semester?
JD Hastings
09:24:19 AM
Fees vary year to year. You can view student fees here: https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/campus/tuition-financial-aid
So they go into Analytics, they go into consulting. They go into design and Development. They go into it, they go into marketing sales. They go into leadership development programs, they go into product management. They go into project management, so it's hard for us to say this is what you know. The exact track that all of our graduates take because our graduates have such diverse interests. And so again, I think it's one of the things we pride ourselves on is the ability to.
Help serve students achieve their career interests in a variety of different areas.

Is there any student forum where all admitted students can talk to each other ? may be a whatsapp/facebook group ?
JD Hastings
09:24:52 AM
Swaroopa - we are working on this.
Lately, and I want to point out that I'm showing a slide if you go to impedeprattduke.edu and you search employment, the first response will be that page he was talking about that has the pie chart of jobs by job function. It will also lead you to our tableau tableau data visualization tool. Do not look at this on your phone, it will break your phone.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:25:24 AM
Right now, we know that select US embassy/consulate locations are closed. However, if you work on getting your I-20, you will be poised to get an appointment time when they open up.
We recommend a computer or a large tablet. This has a lot of data you can toggle domestic versus international on a Nov. You can toggle year of graduation. You can limit by where they went. There's a tab. The tab shown on this slide is employment in the United States, but we also have worldwide employment as well on another tab on that site.
So thank you, doctor Fox.
Let's talk about careers support. Can you tell us a little bit more about the kind of career support students get from your team?
JD Hastings
09:25:58 AM
Career outcomes! https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/campus/career-services/employment
Oh absolutely, so we have four dedicated career counselors that work with our master students to support them and their career interests. And these individuals do of variety of things. They certainly do some counseling, but they also help bring employers to do. Can also help you. Be prepared to network and find employers outside of Duke. So on the counseling side.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:26:26 AM
Hi Swaroopa. One of our awesome current students, Ani, has created an admitted students WhatsApp group. We'll get more information and share it with everyone.

09:26:30 AM
Are MEM students allowed to work as TA/RA?
There are a number of students that are still trying to figure out exactly what they want to do with this same degree right? Where do they want their career to go? They've often figured out that maybe being an electrical engineer or mechanical engineer and being behind a computer for eight hours a day is not what they want to do, but there not necessarily sure what they do want to do, and so our career counselors can certainly work with work with their students to help identify areas of interest to them so that they can then target their career search.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:27:00 AM
We are also working with the MEM program to set up a chat with current students.
And so once you have kind of figured out what it is you want to do, they work with you in being able to present your best self to potential employers. And so this includes making sure you've got a great cover letter to introduce yourself, making sure you've got a nice 32nd introduction if you meet someone and they ask you, oh, So what are you interested in doing a they make sure you've got a good resume that talks about your skills and your capabilities and your interests they work with you too.
On interviews, right? So you do you submit a resume, you get an interview, they work with you to make sure you're presenting yourself well in an interview and they can even council you once you've received job offers to understand what. What are the typical ranges and options that are contained within a job offer? So lot of support on the counseling side. We also do a lot of things to bring employers to campus so the engineering school holds a tech connect each semester. This is where we bring.
Companies interested in hiring engineers in a career fair type event. I'll the broader Duke University also has a career fair every semester we have a startup connective ENT in the spring which is for smaller size companies that come in and then one of the great things about being in the Research Triangle area where there are a number of great universities is in Raleigh. There is North Carolina State University, which is the large public.
Engineering school with in North Carolina and so they horrible hold one of the largest career fairs in the southeast. And they invite Duke students to participate in that. And so that happens in both the fall in the spring as well and we've been running buses to that event in order to help facilitate students getting to that event and beyond career fairs. We also bring companies to campus. So usually during this semester, almost every week there are companies that are interviewing on campus.

09:28:54 AM
Do a lot of students, international students in particular, opt for the 9 month option? Is it considered less 'disadvantaged' than the 15 month option because of the lack of internship?
Your submit a resume for jobs that looked of interest to you and companies will then select individuals for on campus interviews. So lots of opportunities to engage with companies. Lots of counseling in place to help support you in your career search.
Great and I'm also showing a slide right now that talks a little bit about your seminar and workshop Series A lot of companies will come to give seminars and lead kind of small round tables for students as well, right?
Yes, I, uh, so certainly that's part of our seminar and workshop series. You'll often have an opportunity to engage with these folks and then our career counselors will even offer separate.
Uh workshops or lunch. Sorry, not workshops, but events. 2 information sessions to meet with various companies as they come on campus.
We have a live question that I would like to address do a lot of international students opt for the one year option?
The question is, is it considered less disadvantaged than the 15 month option 'cause it'll lack of internship? You'll do an internship in both programs. It's just a matter of when an where you will do those internships, right?

Yes, I would say that the more common option of for international students is to do 3 semesters. This is definitely a personal choice, so don't let that persuade you one way or another. I think a number of international students find the transition to the US in a different culture in a different.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson

Thanks for sharing, Aniket!
Process for the job search. That additional time gives them in the three semester option is just a much better option for them too.

09:30:58 AM
Hi. Can we know more about the tuition fees, if a student were to take a 4-4-4 format as mentioned earlier? Will the fees in that case be per course? Or remain per semester with added fees?
Prepare and understand the US market so that they can navigate it more successfully, but we have had a number of international students that finished the degree in two semesters. But if I were to say which of the two is more common for an international student, I would say the three semester option is more common.
Great and someone asked about the particular fees. If you were taking a three semester option, the fees are not on a per course basis. You pay fees only for that semester, so it's once per semester. You pay that three times. Thank you for the question.
Alright, so let's talk about student life. So someone asked, how early can we enroll in on campus or in the campus employment programs. You'll start with the career team during orientation, right? Rad?
And, Uh, I I. It changes a little bit each year, but often there's some pre work that goes on over the summer as well for your career prep again, mostly wanting you to think about what it is you want to do. Making sure you've prepared your resume as best you can so that you're ready to hit the ground running when you arrive on campus.
Excellent and someone asked can we. Can we live off campus or re required to live on campus? That's an easy one. You live off campus. Duke has.

Hi Sita, we've had plenty of students get job outside of the US. You can view our Tableau data set here: https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/campus/career-services/employment

Many students will work on campus at the libraries, for a dept, or in other positions. Some may serve as TAs/RAs. Positions are generally hourly paid (not a stipend).
That's correct it, and I think actually I think most students prefer that as well. The when there was some graduate student housing, it was often farther away from the engineering quad then the apartments that are off campus. So so I I think it's much preferred for many of the students to live in apartments off campus.

And can you talk a little bit about RA&TA opportunities? Can they pursue those outside the MMM Department?
Students can certainly pursue research and a teaching assistant opportunities. I should mention that it Duke.

Arrival date info: https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/apply/admitted
If you're, uh, if you're thinking about an RA or ATA as a master's student, that is going to be funded on an hourly basis where you work on a research project or. Or is it teaching assistant? It's on an hourly basis that is not associated with a stipend or paid tuition as part of that role. It does vary by University as to how that is handled for the PhD students at Duke it's handled differently, but for the Masters students.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:34:38 AM
We recommend August 1 but you can also arrive around the 15th and still be alright.
It's on an hourly basis, and so in order to find those out, either within the medium or outside the MMM program off, and certainly the research opportunities are found by direct contact with faculty members that are doing interesting research and so talk to them about something you're interested in doing that they're working on in their lab. So that is a very individual faculty by faculty process. Clearly, if there are opportunities that become known to us, we distribute those to our students, but.
Most commonly those are found by networking with of faculty to find those opportunities.
Excellent thank you Ann. I'm going to address a few questions on next steps to give you a chance to catch her breath and pages. Posting some things as well.
We recommend that you arrive if you're an international student on August 1st, but you can also arrive around the 15th and you'd still be alright. Um, those who arrive by August 1st may be able to take advantage of some other opportunities that were offering after accepting the admission office are the next steps to take are if you're in domestic student, you should fill out the Fasfa. If you are an international student, you should gather the material for your visa.
Um fee payments are typically charge. Tuition and fees are charged on the semester basis. You receive abilites do around August 1st. I think you can defer for any reason for up to one year. We do not require deposit and the latest date to notify us of your enrollment decision is in your letter.
Paige Anderson, are you there?
I am now broadcasting the audio.
Oh good, I thought you were. Thank you. We had a few questions about the visa process, particularly, uh, wondered first of all, I want to get to my.
Slide on other student events are going to be having a specific session on steps to securing a US student visa. See the link to sign up for that. It was also in the email invitation that you received page a few people are saying that the appointments for visas are pretty far out. What do you say to that?
I think I might have lost her.
We do want you to attend that live event where we will address kind of all of your visa questions. We had quite a few were going to start the visa process for most students in these coming weeks after the decisions have all been posted.
We will send you exactly what you need to have to post so you'll get an invitation to start your visa process and it will list exactly everything that you need to gather together to start that process in our team will guide you through that. We're pretty much resident experts in how to do that page is working on her Internet right now, but she'll be back.
Shubham Shende
09:38:12 AM
If I accept offer for Fall 2020, and due to COVID-19 I am not able to join by August, can I defer my admission later?
But I do want to do want to say that this steps to securing a US student visa that will be the session to attend. If you have questions on your Visa and I want to point out you don't have to be present to take advantage of that. We record all of these sessions and will send them out to all registered students.
Can I just? Uh oh, maybe pages back, but I was just going to.
I would jump in, jump in.
JD Hastings
09:38:25 AM
Yes, you would be allowed to defer.
I was just gonna chime in, you know I, I know that, uh, I think the question talked about some of the, uh, openings dates that are being posted to secure an appointment with the visa office and so certainly we are optimistic that spaces will be available and so our recommendation to students is to get your documents in as quickly as you can so that once visa office decides that it's going to open and start taking.
Appointments that you are ready to go and you can be. You know one of the early ones in order to secure your visa so so are best thought is to prepare as much in advance. Get all your documents ready to go and then when appointments become available, sign up for those as quickly as you can.

Are there any opportunities for special funding for underrepresented groups ?? I sent a mail regarding this a few days ago
Absolutely, and I think the team has posted the tuition and fees page that has an accordion file accordion menu that you can expand the accordion. Annual see all tuition and fees for the 2020-2021 year and at the bottom you can actually see a PDF download that you can download to.
So we have kind of an estimate. Your mileage may vary. You may find that living expenses are higher or lower than that, but that is what you will need to show for your visa.
Brad, can you talk a little bit about how advisors are assigned?
Shiyu Li
09:40:06 AM
Do we have any opportunity to exchange in other university?
Sure, so in your application you would have identified an area of interest and so we use that to help a identify who we are, who we assigned to which advisor, and so because we would ideally like to assign you with someone with some.
JD Hastings
09:40:27 AM
Shiyu - yes! There is a one semester exchange program with Dartmouth. https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/campus/degrees/dartmouth-exchange
Expertise in that space. So that is how advisors are assigned. We typically do this over the summer, although I think we may be trying to do that a little earlier this year so that students can start to think about those classes on an earlier time frame and the one thing I will point out is you won't be assigned in advisor, but you may talk to any of the advisors within the IMF program to get their guidance and so.
You know there are specific advisers that have knowledge about data Analytics and so if I'm your advisor and you're wanting to talk about data analytics, I will likely refer you to Professor Egger, who is our expert in that space so you can talk to anyone but we just try to assign you an adviser based on your interests.
Great, and I think I think card I do want to point out that you don't just have an academic advisor who support you while you're in the program. You also have an academic coordinator, Tracy Faust. Here she is and.
Assistant director of Student Services Karolyn Gilbert, who are also on the engineering management staff to make sure that you have a wonderful program here. So I wanted to give a shout out to those people.
Do you so can we talk about funding an financial aid doctor? Fox student has asked about that.
All everyone who's been admitted who got a scholarship has been notified of that. All scholarships offers have gone out.
Yann Tamraz
09:42:15 AM
Can we change our concentration from the one specified in the application ?
If you have a status update after your admission letter was posted, that is usually your financial aid letter.
JD Hastings
09:42:30 AM
Yann, yes you can. That can be done when you arrive in the fall.
Sure, so within the MEM program we do offer us some partial scholarships to students based on merit. Now we are our program is very selective to begin with and so choosing individuals from among those are admitted to receive a merit scholarship. Is there are limited number of those that we can give out and so it is very selective. But were.
09:43:03 AM
In light of the recent events, if Duke switches to a completely online mode of teaching in the Fall 20, will I still be eligible for CPT?
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:43:05 AM
Don't feel like you have to stay in a track just because you selected it. That's partially the flexibility of the program!
Certainly thrilled to be able to offer financial aid or partial scholarships to some of our students, but we are not able to offer financial aid to all of our students. We did consider everyone in the scholarship process. There was not a separate application process. We reviewed all applications not only for admissions but for scholarship. While we're making our assessments.
I'm I'm scrolling through questions.
Sayali Dhale
09:43:39 AM
What is the eligibility criteria to be an exchange student?
Uh, so in the chat, someone said, can we change our concentration from the one we specified in the application? Absolutely that something you would do in the fall.
They asked about our exchange programs and were directed to the exchange program with Dartmouth. Can you talk about the Dartmouth Exchange and what students are eligible to take part in that?
Sure is so fundamentally all of the students within the MEM program are eligible to take part in the Dartmouth Exchange. There are a few logistical things that make it make sense for students in other pursuing the three semester option, so one of the.
Shubham Shende
09:44:27 AM
What is the expected size of Fall 2020 class?
The logistical challenges of doing the Dartmouth option is you have to fulfill all of our degree requirements. And when Dartmouth offers classes, is not exactly the same as when Duke offers classes, and so it typically makes the most sense for students to go to Dartmouth in the fall.
And so usually students that have gone to Dartmouth have done it on the three semester options, so they have pretty much completed most of their core classes at Duke and then have gone to Dartmouth in the fall to take additional or to complete their technical electives. That seems to be the most the.
The smoothest transition to do that program? There are some other scenarios under which it can work. It kind of depends on your particular program of study in background, but that is the most common option is for a student to do that in their third semester.
Thank you. What is the expected size of the fall 2020 class?
Sure, so we typically bring in around 140 students here, and this is often around 10 to 15. Students will start in the spring, and so will probably bring in 125 or 130 students in the fall, and so we break this group down for a core classes into three separate classes. So each of your core classes will have roughly 45 students in it, which is.
A nice size for class discussion, which is a vital part of our academic program.
The one exception to this is our long class, which is offered in the spring of our law. Faculty are very busy teaching law classes, and so we we only have one section of that class, and so for that class we do have all 140 students in the same same class, but in general your core classes are going to be right around 45 students are electives depend on the class and the nature of that class. They typically are, I would say.
A22UH-40 students, I would say, but it does depend on the class. For instance are practicums, which are an opportunity for you to.
I think we all just had a blip where we all got kicked out.
Hey Brad, it looks like a Susan may have lost connectivity and we had an Internet flip so.
Well, I'm going to address a few of these questions that I see in here.
If we choose not to take health insurance provided by Duke, should we still pay for the health insurance and healthy healthy's are not the same thing as.
We're back, thanks for navigating this with us. Everyone who's participating Brad I'm, I'm happy to help with some questions and we can continue on until Susan bounces back.
So I don't know. I think I was talking about the size of the class.
As health insurance, you have to pay health ease for use of Dukes, facilities, health facilities. You are required to purchase juice health insurance. If you're an international student.
Yann Tamraz
09:49:13 AM
How diverse is the expected class of 2020 ?
And you don't have to make payments until August 1st. Let's see.
Right so sorry, let me. I don't know exactly when I fell off and so I apologize for repeating myself. So we roughly have about 140 students come in each year, usually in the fall will have 125 or so new students for our core classes. We break that down into three separate sections for each class, and so typically the class size is around 45. Students are electives are smaller than that, and they tend to range from.
Vinay Pawar
09:49:57 AM
How is the Diversity of MEM program with respect to Nationality, Gender, Under Grad expertise and Work ex of the barch?
Usually around 15 to 40 or so students, although a class like our practicums, which is a team of students working on a client based project, we actually limit that to six students per client, and so even though we bring in a modestly large class, certainly compared to some of our peers, we think that provides us a lot of benefits in that were able to provide 30 different technical electives. We have a lot of different.
JD Hastings
09:50:07 AM
Vinay - you can learn more about our class profiles here: https://memp.pratt.duke.edu/apply/class-profiles
JD Hastings
09:50:17 AM
^Yann that will also likely help with your quesiton.
Transfer students and then we make the classes themselves personal by keeping them, uh, less than 50 students. The one exception to that is our law class, which is only offered one time and so that does have all 140 students in that law class.
Great thanks Susan. We hear you.
I'm back, I'm back. I don't know what happened there. I'm sorry guys.
Thank you, thank you page.
Everyone in the world is getting on the Internet today.

09:50:44 AM
For the elective classes in another department, will we take classes with students from other programs.?
I'm sorry I missed some of that. So do you have any other questions men posted?
Deepank Varshney
09:50:48 AM
what is the cycle of payments, do we have to make any payments before we come?
Deepank Varshney
09:50:50 AM
- if instead of 2 semesters, we do the course in 3, how much extra fee will we have to pay?
So I think there was other questions about the the class profile and so you know thinking about an incoming class, so I said we roughly have 140 students that come in each year. Often people ask about work experience, so usually about half of those come in right out of undergrad and about half the students come in with some work experience. The average is roughly two 2 1/2 years for work experience, although each year we typically will have.
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:51:29 AM
You only pay for 2 semesters even if you do it in 3. You'll pay full tuition for 2 semesters.
A couple of folks that have more than that amount of work experience. We have designed the program so it actually we believe it serves both sets of individuals. Those that are right out of undergraduate as well as those with a little bit of work experience. Other demographics. I think there were questions around nationality, so typically we have 20 or 25 different nationalities represented we have.
Of fairly strong international contingent and so usually are our class is 80% or so international students. As I said from a wide variety of countries from a gender perspective, it varies each year, but it's usually 35 to 40% of women in the class and.
The other demographic that we often look at is what's the background the students, and so almost all of our engineering students coming in have engineering backgrounds, but they were in a wide variety of engineering disciplines, so certainly mechanical, electrical, civil, biomedical and so we have a wide range of backgrounds of our students. We do have some individuals that don't have an engineering degree. Those individuals typically have a very strong.
Of math and science background to have prepared him for an engineering management curriculum. But not every student has an engineering degree, but usually 9095% of the students have an engineering or computer science degree.
Vinay Pawar
09:53:25 AM
Is our prior WorkEx/Internship considered for Internship requirements as per MEM program?
Alright, are there any other questions? We're we're nearing the end of our hour. What other questions can we help you with? and I do want to point out that if you have follow-up questions, you can always send those to Pratt underscore Masters at duke.edu.
Another oh sorry, another quick plug for all of my other admitted student events, thanks.
Thank you Susan. Sorry I did see one question coming through in the chat that I don't know that we've addressed and so one of the other things that I really appreciate about Duke is its interdisciplinarity, and we see that in the fact that we have faculty from the School of Business in the School of Law teaching our core classes. But we also allow students to take technical electives outside of the VM program, right? I talked about the 30 electives that we offer, but you also have the opportunity.
To take classes across the engineering school, but even in other schools within the University, so students will commonly take courses from the school of the environment or the School of Business. Sometimes they take courses from the School of Law also from our school of Arts and Sciences, and so the way that works it Duke is that.

09:54:36 AM
Can we take Medical Insurance from our native country providers and is that accepted by duke?
Sarthak Achyut Vaidya
09:54:44 AM
Are there additional costs fro the exchange program with Dartmouth college?
Typically there are three requirements. One is we have to make sure it's a technical electives. So class in Spanish is a very interesting class, but it's not a technical elective, and so in that case you can take the class. It just doesn't count towards your degree requirements.
The other requirements are that you need faculty permission and this is mostly for your own a self interest in that we don't want students taking classes that they are not academically prepared to be successful in, and so the faculty members will often review your background just to make sure that you are suitable to be successful in their class, and then the third element is.
Aniket Fegade
09:55:19 AM
Can we defer admission to Spring 2021 ?
The students in that major have first choice of for spots in the class, and so if if a class fills up with students of from that program, you may not have an opportunity to take the class, but other than those constraints, there's a wide open esta. Take a graduate level classes across the University.
Great, we have a few last minute questions that I'd like to address. Is our prior work experience or internship considered for the internship requirement?
Uh, yes. Prior work experience. As long as it is occured after you complete your undergraduate degree may be considered as fulfilling your internship requirement.
Right in an internship completed after you've finished your undergraduate, could also count as well.
Perfect, perfect, someone asked about taking medical insurance from their native country providers. I believe Duke requires you if you're on F1 status to have Dukes Insurance, someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.
That is my understanding as well.
Perfect, perfect are there additional costs for the exchange program with Dartmouth College? What tuition do you pay when you were at Dartmouth Dr Fox?
Paige Eppenstein Anderson
09:56:27 AM
Yes, students must have US insurance if they are on an F-1 visa
So you paid darkness tuition when you're at Dartmouth.
OK, an you course have your your living expenses in any student fees while you're at Dartmouth, so so that would answer that. And can you defer admission to spring 20 one you uhm you can. You can defer your admission for fall 22 either spring 21 or fall 21 for any reason.
Alright Alright Doctor Fox, I've gotta slide up on our summary or distinctive elements. Can you knew what are some? What are some things you want these students to take away from this event?
Sure, so we've talked about a number of these elements is we've discussed the medium program today. I talked about the interdisciplinarity with engineering law in business and the way that you have an opportunity to structure your curriculum, either through the core classes, which we kind of for some interdisciplinary, or through your electives.
Where you can choose some classes outside the engineering school, the other area that I think from an interdisciplinary perspective that Duke focuses a lot on is an emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative skills. So as you were transitioning to become an engineering leader, I think these qualitative decision making skills are going to be more and more important. You are often going to be facing situations.
That may not have a mathematical formula associated with them. There may be a fair amount of ambiguity in what the future may hold, and you're going to be forced to make decisions, and so being able to develop a frameworks for making good qualitative decision-making skill qualitative decisions is important, and that's one of the things that we emphasize quite a bit. We've talked a lot about flexibility and breath, whether it's in how many semesters you study or the courses that you can take within the program.
I didn't have a chance to talk as much about the program being applied, but if you look at our class is the goal is to prepare you to be a successful practicing engineering management graduate, right? So we're not focused on a lot of theory. We are focused on providing you with skills and knowledge for you to be more effective in your career of interest. And finally, I think we've talked about.
JD Hastings
09:59:21 AM
Hi all, I will work on getting the admitted student WhatsApp link and send it out.
Siddharth Jagetia
09:59:28 AM
Would you be sending additional admits considering all these concerns about students deferring, which would ultimately affect the diversity and class profile for the Fall '20 incoming cohort?
The fact that we are international, we embrace the fact that we have a wide range of nationalities represented, and that this will be the environment in which many of you will be working right. You're going to be working with individuals across the Globe, and we really try to embrace that through a number of different activities in the program so you can better understand people their cultures in their perspectives. And we've also talked a lot about the experience.
Uh, I highlighted this is we kicked off this admitted students a webinar in that one of the things I was most disappointed in is it students aren't able to come to campus and to see the great things that are students are doing from an extracurricular in Co curricular perspective. We put a lot of emphasis on this. Karolyn Gilbert is phenomenal. It working with the students in helping to.
Prepare and promote and support a variety of different activities and clubs of Product Management Club. There's a finance club. There's a consulting club, just a number of things that go on outside of the classroom that we have provided for students to make it a much more enriching experience. While you're at Duke.
Thank you, they are fantastic.
Thank you doctor Fox and I can't say enough about your wonderful alumni. You have the you have a growing set of alumni from all over the world and they are the most engaged and the most delightful to work with. So just a shout out for all of your wonderful alumni. Thank you. They're just great. They're great on somebody asked about.
Additional admits we do have. We have three rounds of admission for fall 20. The deadline for around two was March 15th. Tell your friends that decisions will be posted by May 1st. Alright, I want to Flash this screen up with all of our contact information. Pratt underscore Masters at Duke die Edu should be your first stop. We are getting to those questions as quickly as we can. We appreciate your patience. We will get to them.
And our quick plug for all my other events, I encourage you to attend the student visa event. If you have questions on your visa.
Doctor Fox, thank you so much for your time today.
It's been a pleasure being here. Thank you Susan for hosting this.
Well, thank you and I'm sorry I dropped out there for a moment.
So you did. Everybody dropped out for a moment. Thank you for staying with us students. Alright, well, please let us know if you have any other information. Any other questions an will see you at our next events.
Thank you, have a great day.
