The Impossibility of Discipleship: Blindness and Sight in Isaiah and Mark

In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus calls his disciples to take up the cross and follow; betrayed and abandoned by the Twelve, he dies forsaken and alone. How does one make sense of the failure of Jesus’ disciples - then and now - to follow their teacher in the way of the cross? For Mark, it is the prophecies of Isaiah that provide the interpretive key for making sense of discipleship failure even as they point us toward its only remedy.
